Hair Masks and Rinses / Honey, Egg, and Coconut Oil / Rice Water and Lavender

So I thought I'd try out a new DIY hair treatment, well, a combination of two actually.

A honey, egg, and coconut oil conditioning mask followed by a rice water rinse!  I was a bit concerned about the smell a rice water rinse may leave on my hair so I decided to add some lavender to it too.

First the hair mask.

I combined a couple of teaspoons of honey with an egg and a couple of teaspoons of coconut oil.  The coconut oil I use is the pure stuff you buy in jars (I got mine from Holland & Barrett). I believe I read the pure oil is the best for hair treatments. Mine is solid so I have to usually melt it a little before use.

To produce the rice water rinse I rinsed some rice (y'dont say!?) for a little first to remove any potential dirt or impurities. I then rinsed it once more in a bowl but kept the water. It should be fairly cloudy still. I then set this aside with some lavender from the garden (pre-rinsed!) also soaking in it too. (Oh I also added some oats too, not sure why, thought they may add something!)

Here is how my hair was looking before anything was put on it. The ends aren't the healthiest from use of dyes, but it had faded to quite a nice colour. Not straightened, just how it was when I'd woken up that day with it's random waves going on and due a washing.

First I applied the mask. It was a bit sticky of course due to the honey but it wasn't too bad. I mainly applied it to the length with a little closer to the scalp too. I left it on for around an hour, the rice water still sitting. I sieved out the rice and lavender and transferred the rice water to a container ready to use.

Here I am with the hair mask and beautifully fetching shower/hair dye cap.

After washing with a sulphate free shampoo and conditioning I used my rice water rinse a couple of times then left it to dry naturally.

Here's how it was looking when it was almost dry. The lengths were dry, my head was still a bit damp.
It was maybe looking a bit 'fuller' and even brighter but not particularly glossy or with any sort of 'wow look at the difference!' factor. The ends were still looking over processed and fine, dried out even.

However, the next day it definitely had more shine on it. Here it is the following morning compared to how it was the day before, before any treatment. The ends look a lot healthier and the natural curls in my hair seem to have been able to form. I think you'll agree that it definitely looks healthier and glossier.

I'm not sure what it is, but it definitely looked better after a day. Maybe it needed time to settle a bit after the treatment, I don't know!

I don't know how my hair would have looked one day after washing and conditioning as I normally would, maybe I should have tried to photograph my hair after that situation before trying out the treatments to see the difference in the end result, but I have to say I did really like how it looked in those final photos, so I'd personally recommend the mask and rinse I carried out and will be trying it again!

Let me know if you give it a go!
