Annie's Burger Shack Derby / A Vegetarian's View...
Time to try another new food place before the Eat Out to Help Out scheme ends, today, Annie's Burger Shack!
I first heard of Annie's years ago when they were just in Nottingham, but figured it was just another burger bar, albeit a highly rated one, that's gonna have limited veggie options.
Dan and I ended up noticing one a little while back while we were in Derby and went in out of curiosity to just see what veggie/vegan options they do. It was quite a surprise to be told that every burger on the menu could be made as a vegetarian or vegan option! Awesome!
It wasn't until I looked their menu up again online before we went that I discovered just how many options there are...over 30 burgers! When you don't eat meat the burger option eating out is usually a pretty standard 'bean burger' in most places, so to have over 30 options is just alien! I imagine the patty part is the same on them all but they jazz it up with so many different toppings, from cheese and bacon to Mexican rice and beans, and even peanut butter and jam (that one's called 'The Elvis', obviously). I managed to get it down to these three (which took some work)
The Boston Nibbler / 10.90 (single) / 12.90 (double)
Double or single burgers topped with Swiss and Cheddar cheese slices, two beer battered onion rings, grilled pineapple, two bacon rashers and tangy American burger sauce.
The Sunday Dinner / 12.90
A sumptuous burger topped with roast chicken breast, homemade Yorkshire pudding, stuffing ball, mini roast potatoes and mini vegetables, all covered in homemade gravy.
The Vermonter / 11.90
A burger topped with two pancakes, crispy strips of bacon and lashings of authentic American maple syrup. Amazing!
But there's a pub near us that does veggie/vegan Sunday roasts, so I ended up leaning more towards the other two. The pineapple aspect on the Boston one sounds nom (yes pineapple definitely belongs on pizza), and the third one has pancakes, so yeah.
I ended up going for the Boston Nibbler, with sweet potato fries, and the Cookies n Cream milkshake.
The drinks came first, it took a while for the food to come, so I'd drank most of my milkshake, but they were pretty busy. Portion size was great, big burger bun and fillings, large amount of fries, the milkshake maybe wasn't as big as milkshakes I've had at other places but meh, half price.
I definitely recommend the milkshake, and the fries were lovely, been a while since I'd had sweet potato ones. Buuuut the burger was actually kinda disappointing. My partner's mostly vegan but has started eating free range eggs (he went for "The Big Breakfast") so we got the same non-meat option patty and it was the dryest crumbliest veggie burger we've ever had. We both agreed that we wouldn't be rushing back there and were just glad it was half price as we'd have been very disappointed if we'd paid full price for that meal (mine would have been just under £11). As for the rest of the burger contents, the fake bacon was more like floppy ham slices folded in half and not bacon like, the cheese was okay, the onion rings were kinda soggy and small, and I don't remember even noticing sauce on it. The pineapple was decent I guess?! But yeah, unimpressed unfortunately after the hype around this place.
But we were seeing friends, and the building it's in is really nice, so the atmosphere and company made up for the not so amazing food! We'll probably just go for somewhere else next time.
Shame!
